Plastic fantastic?

Well I thought it was about time to write another blog, here's some photo's of a necklace I made and sold to a lovely lady in New Zealand. Its made from reclaimed Perspex, sterling silver and a recycled red plastic folder.

I have a turbulent relationship with plastic, I spend as much time as i can near the ocean and beach combing has become a healthy obsession.

For my degree show I produced a ring which replaced traditionally used gems and stones with little plastic nurdles I collected from Hells mouth beach in Wales.

These plastic nurdles, aptly named mermaids tears, are the raw material from which our plastic products are made.
As these nurdles resemble fish eggs the worry has become not only for pollution and animal welfare but potentially our health as it could be entering the food chain.

On a lighter note the sun is shining and i did lots of gardening yesterday so the garden is lovely

I'm a lumberjack

Well here it is, my first blog, its quite exciting really. I thought I'd start with some photo's from my weekend at Birdlings Flats and being a lumberjack at Conway Flats, there are lots of Flats in Canterbury.

I've just finished 3 months work experience in New Zealand with a jeweller called Peter Elsbury
www.elsbury.net
I came over to New Zealand on a 5 week family holiday but ended up staying for 5 months, whoops. I've had such a great time and I have come out of it with the one thing I wanted, to be able to feel like a real jeweller.

Unfortunately I have now left the creative and lovely people of Lustre gallery and am heading back to England and my little workbench in the garage on my own, I'm not worried....
